Swimming Pool Project

Project Update November 2011

Paengaroa School and Community Pool construction begins

The successful tenderer for stage 1, an outdoor pool, is Shawn Williamson Building, licensed building practitioner. Construction begins with the removal of the preload this week and early next week.

The plans include future proofing of the foundations and filtration systems for stage 2, the indoor aspect. We want quality swimmers and water skills to add to the quality of our children’s life. We need quality facilities, quality coaching and quality training / teaching – hence the need for a quality  pool.

Learning to swim well will ensure opportunities are taken up by community members because they have been taught and have had modelled to them correct leisure use, swimming club access and endurance and training opportunities.  Our whole community will be able to enjoy the Bay of Plenty’s key resources – The beach, surf, rivers, estuaries, sailing, Kayaking, fishing, diving.

Many of our current community travel up to 25km to indoor training pools, and during the peak summer periods the local pools are overcrowded or unavailable. The Paengaroa community are looking forward our new pool  that will take around seven months to build. The outdoor pool will provide swimmers with pool access for at least 8 months of the year, once heated appropriately with solar and heat pumps the season could be extended to twelve months of the year, depending on operational funding.

The Eastern Arterial Route will result in Paengaroa becoming a very convenient option for housing, schooling and recreation.

Having a large 25m x 10m pool will give the children opportunities to do proper endurance training and create a future population that can swim to save themselves.

Update August 2011

To all community members, interested business owners and friends,

The Pool Committee are delighted to announce that the Paengaroa School and Community Pool is into its’ final phase of planning and tendering.

The committee has raised over $650000.00 and can now proceed with this project subject to final tender pricing. Special mention must be made of Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust donating $235000.00, Bay Trust donating $65000.00 and Lotteries donating $330000.00. Western Bay District Council will contribute a further $20000.00 towards the car parking area.
The final plans should be ready for tendering on the 21st  September , with tenders closing on the 19th  October. We hope to award a contract to the successful tenderer on the 25th  October and begin building by the 1st November 2011.

While we may need to round up some extra funding for the likes of heating, lane ropes, starter blocks, seating, perimeter fencing and a pool cover. It is hoped that we will have a fully operational pool and changing sheds by the end of March 2012.

Many families have donated some money towards the new pool and much has already been spent preparing the site and ensuring we future proof our design with foundations to make an indoor pool one day.

The site for the pool has been signed off by Tonkin and Taylor. Stamm Surveying have marked out the exact location of the pool and final floor heights have been established so that the hole and preload can be dug and fill removed before the 1
st November .

The project has a Resource Consent. The school has upgraded its power supply and ensured that this has capacity for the new pool. These are all very positive steps towards our final goal of a 25 metre X 10 metre pool. The shallow end will be 1.1m deep and gradually sloping to 1.4m at the deep end. A small office and entry foyer is also planned.

If any members of the community wish to view the plans and specifications, these will be available soon after the 21
st September.
